Description

The tight group of galaxies that is surrounding the elliptical galaxy NGC 708 is known as the Fath Cluster.  Named after Edward Arthur Fath who in the early 20th century was one of the first astronomers to find evidence that galaxies are large collections of stars at vast distances using spectroscopy.  The Fath cluster is the central part of a larger galaxy cluster known as Abell 262 which lies in the constellation Andromeda and is approximately 240 Mly's distant.
